Ijazah Program in Bedaya Academy

What is Ijazah meaning?

An Ijazah is an Arabic term that means "permission" or "authorization." In the course of Islamic education, it refers to a certification or license bestowed by a master teacher on his student for having soundly apprehended a certain topic or the text of a teaching from the former. It serves as a formal recognition of the student's competence and authority to transmit the knowledge to others.

What does ijazah mean in islam?

In Islam, ijazah refers to a formal authorization or permission given by a sheikh or muhaddith to his student, letting him transmit and teach Islamic knowledge, especially from the Quran, hadith of Prophet Muhammad PBUH, or other religious sciences. The practice essentially has a student study under a learned teacher on the subject, acquire proficiency in the subject, and finally be given certification or written permission attesting to competency.

This would remain an important aspect of Islamic education: the tradition of ijazah, which ensures that knowledge is transmitted from one generation to the next in an authentic and reliable manner.

What is the Ijazah in Quran?

Specifically, when we are speaking about a Quran Ijazah, it is a term that refers to a certificate or permission granted from a Hafiz teacher, having proficiently mastered and memorized the entire Quran. The student has to hear the Quranic words after the qualified teacher, checking the quality of the sound along with the rules of recitation. Then, in the case of satisfaction from his performance, the teacher issues ijaza to the student and recognizes him as having the right for the Qur'anic knowledge's transmission. An ijazah is, therefore, of immense value within the Quranic studies and assures a very high level of dedication, scholarship, and the spiritual relationship of the student with the Quran. Thus, it is essential to Islamic education since it guarantees the preservation of the recitation and meanings of the Holy Quran right from the Prophet through a chain of authorized transmissions.

What are Ijazah Types?

There are different forms of Ijazah in Islamic & Quranic Learning, upon the subject and level of experience being certified. A brief description of popular types of Ijazah follows:

  1. Ijazah in Quran Recitation: The student has read the whole of the Quran in recitation and has duly observed the regulations with regard to the right articulation, intonation, and recitation (tajweed) of the Quran.
  2. Ijaza in Quran Memorization (Hifz): The student has properly memorized the whole of the Holy Quran with tajweed and its rules according to the examination and estimation of the Quran teacher (Hafiza).
  3. Ijazah in the Qur'anic Sciences: This ijazah revealed an area of studying the Qur'an with the aim of its detailed learning, understanding its deeper meaning, and uncovering the secrets of the linguistic structure.
  4. Ijazah in Hadith: This Ijazah carries with it the meaning one who has succeeded in the sciences of Hadith, from memorization and authentication to commentary of the words and actions of Muhammad.
  5. The Ijazah in Islamic Jurisprudence (Fiqh): This Ijazah hereby bears witness that the holder has reached a duly attained grasp of the laws and principles in regard to Islamic Jurisprudence (Fiqh), fully qualified to deduce legal rules from primary sources such as the Quran, and has achieved full qualification in the subject.
  6. Ijazah in Islamic Studies: Perhaps it must be placed under its label, including a variety of disciplines, such as theology (Aqeedah), Seerah, and Islamic ethics (Akhlaq).

Ijazah in Quran Recitation

Ijazah in Quran Recitation is a certificate granted by a qualified teacher to his student for presenting the Qur'an under the rules of tajweed with perfection and accuracy from memory.

Tajweed means to give precise right kind of pronunciation, and characteristics to every letter and word of the Qur'an so that, in turn, the recitation is in conformity with its revelation to Prophet Muhammad.

The process of obtaining an ijazah in Quran Recitation typically involves the following steps:

  1. Tajweed Rules Learning: Along with these, a student starts learning the Tajweed rules just the way he learns the rules for proper Arabic articulation—rules of elongation (Madd), rules of nasalization (Ghunnah), and other phonetic rules which govern Quranic recitation.

  2. Recitation Practice: Similarly, the student would also have a recitation practice under the supervision of a qualified teacher, in which he would correct the student wherever a mistake in recitation was noticed, such as pronunciation and intonation of the verses or Tajweed rules.

  3. Evaluation from the Quran Tutor: From time to time, he kept some verses that needed to be evaluated by the teacher. The teacher evaluated his skill on that matter and necessary feedback was provided for further improvement.

  4. Completion of Recitation: When the student has completed the recitation of the full Quran and has been correct in most of his recitation.

  5. Final Assessment: The student will perform the final recitation before the complete Quran, maintaining fluency, accuracy, and dominance over the Tajweed rules in front of the teacher.

  6. Ijazah Ceremony: When the teacher is satisfied with what the student will do, he gives a certificate of competency to the student or writes a document of the student's ability in reciting the Quran.

Ijazah in Quran memorization

The program of Ijazah in Quran memorization, or Hifz Ijazah, is given to the student once he completes the memorization or Hifz of entire Quran, having done it from the core of his heart, letter to letter, word to word, and even vowel to vowel, according to the strict observation of a qualified teacher Hafiz or Hafiza.

Memorizing the Qur'an is the highest achievement in Islam, and an ijazah in Qur'an memorization shows that the student would be carrying it on during his whole life to protect and communicate the sacred text.

The process of obtaining an ijazah in Quran memorization typically involves the following steps:

  1. Revision of correct Recitation: Prior to the memorization of the Holy Quran by heart, a student first gets to learn the way the Holy Quran is read, gaining the required basics in Quranic recitation, including pronunciation, intonation, and the rules of Tajweed
  2. Memorization methods:  the students learn how to memorize using effective techniques and ways taught under the qualified sheikh, these may include repetition, recitation, visualization, then the quran student moves to the point of reciting, understanding the meanings of the verses.
  3. Start of Memorization: The student then begins the course of memorizing the Quran. He starts from short chapters (surahs) and progresses to longer ones. The effort is to memorize each part with due accuracy and pronunciation.
  4. Recitation Practice: The student, based on developed ability for continued memory, practices recitation with the teacher of verses already memorized, corrected, and given feedback by the teacher. The teacher guides for the correction of any mistake in reciting or remembering.
  5. Regular Revision and Review: The student undertakes this through doing exercises of revision and reviewing regularly so that it will strengthen for memorization and also fine-tune for recitation. This will involve repetitions of sections that have been recited so that they are not forgotten.
  6. Complete Memorization: Once the full Quran has been memorized, the learner is made to go through a process of complete revision and assessment in a way that the whole memorized portion is read perfectly and with proficiency.
  7. Final Assessment: Student will recite the entire Holy Quran from his memory to his Sheikh.
  8. Obtain the Ijazah & Be Certified: When the teacher is satisfied with the memorization of the student, and the teacher 's heart is reassured that the student is reciting the Quran correctly as it was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) he hands the student the certificate Ijazah as acknowledgment regarding the achievements of the student. The student will be able to teach others the Quran, and give Ijazah to others also.
